Join Dr. Marjorie Lehman as she discusses the Jewish community of Hijar, Spain with scholar Dr. Lucia Conte Aguilar, a Jewish woman who was born there and raised Catholic. Hear from Dr. Conte Aguilar about her quest to uncover the rich Jewish history of Hijar. We will visit Hijar remotely, see the remains of its synagogue, and discuss its significance as one of the first places where Jewish books were printed. Hear the story of Hijar’s printing press and of the books that the Jews took with them when they left Spain in 1492. View a late 15th-century copy of Jacob ben Asher’s legal code, the Tur, printed in Hijar and now housed in the JTS rare book room that has linked Drs. Lehman and Conte Aguilar in a shared personal and scholarly journey.
