JTS’s famous grown-up Megillah reading and multimedia shpiel are back!
For a taste of the kind of thing we do, here’s a sample from last year (the video will start at a Hamilton song parody which followed chapter 4):
This year’s tunes are drawn from Tick Tick Boom, Annie Get Your Gun, Encanto, Motown, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes, On Your Feet, and Beauty and the Beast.
- Maariv and full megillah (from scrolls) will be done live in real-time from JTS, with a kahal present (smaller than usual for safety). Maariv will begin at 7 pm EST.
- The spiel is integrated between chapters of the megillah and will be pre-recorded to work as well on Livestream as in person.
- The text of maariv and the megillah (Hebrew/English) will be on-screen, side-by-side with the reader/davener.
- The spiel is for the general public (not insider JTS humor), and it’s for adults. All the humor is grounded in Megillat Esther as well as midrash and commentary, with ties to current events. (While it’s mostly apolitical, fair warning to those in particularly polarized congregations: the humor assumes that science and reproductive rights are good things, and that conspiracy theories and the January 6 Capitol breach are not.
Tune in via Livestream from the comfort of your home or synagogue (groups welcome). You’ll enjoy irreverent, witty satire set to familiar Broadway tunes. Ma’ariv, too.
